Charlotte Gordon


In 1799, Charlotte was a witness for the Coroners' inquest into the suspicious death of Robert Dainien.

Informations of Witnesses this 6th, July 1799 in the Parish of St. James Westminster at the House of Thomas Rixom the Sign of the Harp in Carnaby Street by Anthy Gell Coroner for the sd. City & Liberty touching the Death of Robert Dainien then & there lying dead as follow, to Wit.

Charlotte Appleman of No. 53 Carnaby Street being sworn deposeth as follows
I-keep the said House No. 53, that the deceased has lodged there only a Week Monday last the 1st. July and has been feverish and complained of a Pair in his Side ever since Monday last that on Thursday Evening last the 4th. instant he came home about 8 o'Clock who he told [..] me thought he was a little better and hoped soon to get well but frequently put his hand to his left Side and had always a slow Fever he said he was then going to bed and as he used always to go out early in a Morning and take the they of his Room door with him [..] I concluded that Yesterday morning (Friday the 5th.) he was gone out as usual but about one o'Clock in the Afternoon having not seen any thing of him I knocked twice at his Room Door and as nobody answered I tried the Door wch. was not locked and the they within side I open'd it I discovered that the deceased was dead in his Bed, upon which I told the People in the House what I had seen who went in and found that he was quite dead and as I lived in the next Room to the deceased, and never heard him [..] green or call for Assistance I have reason to think he died of in a Fit in the Night

A John Gordon is listed as living in Portugal Street (a.k.a. Piccadilly) very close to the church of Saint James'. He is recorded there, with 'backshop', from 1787-1792, and again in 1808.
