Adam APPELMAN was possibly born in Germany (see **[[#The Will of Adam Appelman]]** below). 

Adam was a pianoforte maker, and appears to have worked for the [[wp>Kirkman_(harpsichord_makers)|Kirkman]] family.

From 1795 to his death in 1803, he was recorded as living in Carnaby Street [No. 53((Charlotte Appelman of No. 53 Carnaby Street: witness 6th, July 1799, for Coroners' inquest into the suspicious death of Robert Dainien.))], Westminster, following the previous resident Mary Say. Also noted a few doors away is a John Reid/Read, who could possibly be the same John who acted as a witness at Adam's marriage to Charlotte.

In 1800, he was also listed in the Land Tax register for Edward Yard.

Today it is known as All Souls' Place (the road between All Souls' Church and the BBC building).

Adam married [[Gordon Charlotte 1762|Charlotte GORDON]] 27 October 1793 at [[https://www.sjp.org.uk/buildinghistorya.html|St James' (Piccadilly), Westminster]], Middlesex; both of the parish, by banns, witnessed by John Reid((Possibly the same John Reid/Read resident in Carnaby Street.)) and J(ohn). Gordon((I have not been able to establish the relationship between this J(ohn) Gordon and Charlotte, but it is possibly a brother. Although John Gordon is a common name, there is one listed as living in Portugal Street (a.k.a. Piccadilly) very close to the church of Saint James'. He is recorded there, with 'backshop', from 1787-1792, and again in 1808.)).

This is the last Will and Testament\\ 
of me Adam Appelman of Great Portland Street\\ 
in the parish of Saint Mary le bone in the county of\\ 
Middlesex pianoforte maker whereas the sum of one\\ 
thousand one hundred and fifty six Goulders((Approximately £8,650 of "purchasing power" today.)) and twenty\\ 
two Kreutzers((From Wikipedia: **The Kreuzer**, in English usually kreutzer, was a coin and unit of currency in the southern German states prior to the introduction of the German gold mark in 1871/73, and in Austria and Switzerland. After 1760 it was made of copper.)) was at Michaelmas which was in the year\\ 
of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety six due\\ 
and owing to me from John Muller of Oberingelheim\\ 
in palantine in the territories of the French Republic((**Rhenish Hesse** prior to 1792.))\\ 
being the product of the sale of certain Land Given and bequeathed\\ 
unto me in and by the last will and testament of my late\\ 
Father Henry Appelman late of Oberingelheim And\\

so ever I hereby bequeath the same and every\\

**21 June 1825**\\ 
A great fire broke out at Mr. Cruzett’s, a carver and gilder, in Great Titchfield-street, which spread with irresistible violence, and communicated to several houses in Mortimer street, Wells-street, and Great Portland-street, and before it could be subdued between 20 and 30 houses were reduced to ashes, including Stodart’s pianoforte manufactory, a timber yard, St. Margaret’s chapel, and Varley’s picture gallery, in which were consumed many fine works of art; no lives were lost, but the destruction of property was estimated at upwards of 200,000l.\\
